Very, very sad news: Terry Pratchett has early-onset Alzheimer's. Having happily devoured almost all of his books this year after sneering at and mocking them for nearly two decades, I was really upset to read this.
This was the first news I read after coming home. I'm so sad about it - he's been a part of my reading life for 15 years now, I've made friends through sharing his books, and it's strange to think that it will stop sometime. I hope he hangs on for as long as he can, and has good people to take care of him.
I've never actually read any of his books (as we discussed when you were in Edinburgh, I think) but I'm finding this news really upsetting. And it's been odd seeing people saying in other places "oh, well at least it isn't cancer or something like that" - frankly, I'd take cancer over Alzheimer's any day.
Me too - I think it's one of the most horrendous conditions imaginable, and as Kate and I were saying above, the thought of it happening to him seems so cruel and awful. Not that it isn't cruel and awful when it happens to anyone else, but the thought of that funny, inventive mind slowly being eaten away is terribly upsetting.
