I was wondering why I love crazy German ice-skating soap opera Alles Was Zählt, which I've been watching avidly online since last week (every single episode is available! It's awesome!). Then it dawned on me. We've got a plucky young ice-skater from the wrong side of the tracks who is discovered at random and chosen for the ice team of a fancy gym, only to become the rival of the owner's glamorous, evil daughter, whose hunky boyfriend is kind to our heroine. Our heroine's brutish stepfather has forbidden her to skate and when he finds out she's been deceiving him, kicks her out of the house and she is forced to go and stay with the owner's family. And when the hunky boyfriend gives her the new skates she needs, they initially hurt her feet so much that when she has to take a surprise skating exam (long story), she needs her scruffy old skates - but the evil rival has stolen them from her locker! So she has to skate in the painful new skates! But she's so awesome that she dazzles all the judges!

In what other medium would we find such a tale? Why, in old-school girls' comics, of course! The whole thing is straight out of Mandy or Judy! And that, I think, is why I love it. That and the fact that every episode ends on an awesome cliffhanger.

A crazy German ice-skating soap opera! That has made my week!

It's a good job I was hanging out with all those Swiss skaters last month, I might just about be able to understand it.

You must give it a try! I was actually thinking that you would particularly enjoy it. To be honest, even if you couldn't understand all the dialogue I'd say you could probably figure out what was going on. The actress who plays the heroine, Diana, was apparently a real champion iceskater before an injury forced her to give up serious competing - to my ignorant eyes, her skating is fantastic.

If you want to check out the first episode, click on the link above then go down to the episode list and click on 14, which will take you to the page with the very first episodes. For some reason the first episodes stop about a third of the way through for an ad and then start again at the beginning and play all the way through so don't be alarmed if it suddenly restarts.

No subtitles in English, I'm assuming?

Otherwise I would so watch it!

Alas, no subtitles! Which means its full delights are limited to those who can understand Deutsch. But seriously, if you ever a German class in high school (and even if you didn't), you could figure out what was going on.

Desafortunadamente soy estudiante de los idiomas románticos, así que no entiendo nada de alemán.

I am so trying this! It can be a reward for doing some work, or something. Mein deitsch ist fauchtbar, aber ich...will give it ein gut schule try.

It is incredibly girlsowny. Thereis a series of teen skating books I like as well, which is by Nicholas Walker and features a bad-tempered heroine who keeps getting their partnership into trouble, and high competition.

It has just this moment occurred to me that you might not be familiar with Swan. Swan is this awesome awesome manga series by Ariyoshi Kyoko about a girl who wants to be a ballerina more than anything, but she learned how to dance in a tiny provincial ballet school and picked up bad habits, but she has heart! So she manages, against all the odds, to get selected at a national ballet competition for young dancers who'll receive special training. And there is a dishy male ballet teacher who is Russian and a disciplinarian, and bitchy rivals, and nice guys who fall totally in love with her without her so much as noticing them because Ballet Comes First, and the dancing, my God, it's so beautifully drawn, you'll swear you could see them move. Reading Swan is as close as I can get to being 10 years old again without a time machine.
