jenny darling!

Here's one for my two fellow Archers fans - has anyone else listened to Jennifer's Diary? I haven't read the book - I'm not quite that bad - but it was fun to listen to this! I do find it weird seeing what the Archers actors look like - most of them don't look like I imagine them - although Brian and Debbie sort of do. And of course, in my mind Hayley looks like Dawn from the Office (because that's who she is). But Jennifer totally looks wrong! I imagine her with dark hair. Ah, the magic of radio....

Really? She's also Jasper Carrot's daughter, you know. That's my only bit of Archers trivia, I think. And, that is not Jennifer. The only one who looks right is Jill, I think, but then I knew what she looked like because I saw her on Casualty.

Phil always looks absurdly wrong to me: he ought to look like someone who's farmed for 60 years, and instead he looks like someone who's been an actor for 60 years. Brian, on the other hand, is perfect.

Anyone else going to listen to the retrospective this evening?

I did! I'd actually heard a bit of it before, when it was first aired (the retrospective, that is, not the original shows!), and I really liked it. So funny to hear the youthful Jennifer, with her voice almost exactly the same.

Have I ever admitted that when I first started listening to the Archers, when I was about 14, I actually got a "best of the Archers" BBC double tape which I still have? Oh, the dorkiness.

This was my favourite story line since the whole John/Haley and ... what was her name? Sharon? story.

Is Shula the one who is really married to Brian? I know it's someone creepy anyway.

Completely OT...
Was it your letter in the Independent I saw on Monday? Was very impressed and also totally agree with what you said.

Re: Completely OT...
Yes, that was me! I meant to mention it here, and totally forgot.

That John Walsh piece really, really annoyed me. It was insanely patronising. If he'd written an article about how sad it was that everyone from Jamaica wasn't a comical laid back rasta it would (rightly) never have been printed.

Welcome! And, I salute your Archers devotion. I'm just about to listen to the afternoon repeat of last night's episode, which I missed. Thank God for radio 4.

How did you start listening to it, by the way?

oh, whoops, forgot to answer.

i read about it in papersky's journal -- she is a welsh expat and her aunt writes her and tells her what happened (with commentary!). it sounded interesting to me, especially because it's (a) only 15 minutes long and (b) has been on the air for over 50 years. and i got hooked. i now own the archers encyclopaedia, the 2004 update, and i ever have a calendar.

in fact, i did, and i thought it was fun myself. i find brian so loathsome. "jenny, darling ... " and heavy breathing. EW.

hey, tom hasn't been on the show lately. i wonder if he has been ground into one of his sausages.

God, you're right, he hasn't been in it at all. You'd think his family would have at least mentioned him over the festive season....
