gay cowboy film - no slash required

This piece on the forthcoming Ang Lee film makes me very hopeful. The piece quotes some producer saying that the kissing scene in the first mainstream film about a gay romance had audiences "running screaming down the aisles", which I find ridiculous but sadly believable, but I I hope - and sort of think -that things have changed for the better since then. Although one look at the average issue of the Sun (which ran a little thing about the fact that the video for Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful' had a shot of two men kissing along with a photo, for which it actually apologised saying "hope we didn't put you off your cornflakes!" The Sun is written and edited by fuckers) makes me feel a little less confident.

God, I hope that film gets made.

From the Salon article:

Even "Philadelphia," a Columbia TriStar movie hailed as Hollywood's first gay love story, showed little sign that Tom Hanks, in an Oscar-garnering performance as a man in the late stages of AIDS, had ever met, much less made love to, his partner, played by Antonio Banderas.

Bwa ha haa! So true!

I join you in your hopes! Especially as Brokeback Mountain is the only text by Annie L. Proulx that I've even remotely enjoyed - the rest are either glurge or grim, grim, grim.

Glurge. Nasty, sentimental tripe à la The Shipping News - though in fairness, that did have one of the best gay characters in mainstream literature, ever. Still: it was eyewash.
