latin geek alert!

Blame it on five years of secondary school Latin, during which I had to translate Book II of the Aeneid - the fall of troy section - and learn 17 pages of it off by heart, but I am really looking forward to this. Look! A thousand ships! Cool!

I hope they have Laocoon running down in hot haste from the citadel, and being killed by the serpents with frothy bloody manes, which was so freakish (especially in our translations) it always raised a near-hysterical laughing fit in our Latin class. Hey, when you're stuck in a Latin class, you'll take what jollies you can get...

My class, unfortunately, proved absolutely incapable of learning any of the -plector compounds, especially amplector. This led to many lectures, which were almost always (and inexplicably) followed by the request to take out our copies of the cartoon in which a snowplow throws snow in the shape of that famous sculpture of Laocoon and his sons being devoured by the serpent.

Ahem. Latin class memories, indeed.
