Awww, I love Joss Whedon. This is from his statement (scroll down) about Angel's demise:

"Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

"'Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn.'

Sniff. I can't believe that when this is over, that's it for the Buffyverse. Forever. We'll never find out what happens to everyone. It's kind of pathetic that this makes me genuinely sad, but it does.

I don't think that's it for the Buffyverse forever! (Because if it was, I'd cry, and I'm not crying. No.) Comics, movies, Faith spinoff? Lots of possibilities, which I shall continue to believe in.

Also, I love Joss Whedon. Maybe it would be good if he went in a whole new direction - I mean, I love Firefly, so Buffy wasn't his One Good Idea.

No Way!!!
OMG! when did they cancel Angel and why? !...I mean yeah they haven't all been perfect episodes, but I liked the puppet thing!....and I hate to see it end before Joss gets a chance to wind things up....and this must really suck for Joss first Firefly and now Angel...this sucks!

There's still some hope that UPN or TNT might pick it up (UPN picked up Buffy for Seasons 6&7, while TNT is a syndicate outlet for Angel). But go to www.supportangel.com for the campaign -- they definitely played a role in getting Season 5 of Angel greenlit (I sent off a postcard myself). Physical mail in the form of postcards seems to be the most effective thing (online petitions and emails aren't worth the electron's they're written on and things that go in envelopes tend to remain unopened due to security concerns)

noooo! as sad as i am that angel's cancelled, i really hope upn doesn't pick it up. buffy went so downhill after it went to upn, it was painful.

Actually, I don't think that was UPN's fault, but Mr Whedon's, however much I respect his creative chops. I've talked about this before, but I believe the root cause of Buffy's decline was that Whedon couldn't (or wouldn't) make the transition from a show that had the form of Lead Character plus Supporting Cast, to one that was pure Ensemble. Ultimately, there just wasn't enough steam in the Buffy-as-Slayer concept to make it the be-all-and-end-all of the show for seven seasons (Next week, Buffy struggles to come to terms with her power--again!). Now, don't for a second think I don't love Buffy (and I actually really liked Season Six), but by Season Four, I wasn't watching it for Buffy, but for Willow, Giles, Xander, Anya, etc. This is one of the reason's I've been such a big Angel fan -- it's Buffy without Buffy!

very good points, and i agree that the non-buffy characters were always my biggest draw. but, well, i think upn and marti had a lot to do with the spuffyfest the show became in season 6. i know a lot of people love the spuffy, but i couldn't stand it. but that's a whole season 6 rant i'm too tired to go into right now. :)

I didn't love Spuffy, in the sense that I loved, and rooted for, Willow/Oz, Willow/Tara, Giles/Jenny, or Xander/Anya, but I did find it interesting to watch a portrayal of a deeply screwed up and unhealthy relationship, much more so than even Buffy/Angel, which, while also doomed, was never unhealthy (notwithstanding blood loss related trips to the ER :) ) and didn't push the characters off the rails nearly as much. I thought it worked that the Spuffy realtionship felt meaningless and artificial, because it was: two broken people screwing 'cos they can't think of anything better to fill the void. Also Spike's arc kept the show from being All About Buffy. :)
