GIP in wonderland

A new icon, taken from a photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron of none other than Alice Liddell. I went to the Julia Margaret Cameron exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery last year, and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen - all these beautifully etheral but real Victorian people. I bought a print of the photo from which the icon is taken, and it looks like a photo of a ghost.

My undergraduate university owns the (huge) collection of photographs taken by Charles Dodgson of children, including Alice. She was ethereally beautiful, even as a child. On the other hand, the collection includes letters from Dodgson to the parents of the children he was photographing, and they have a real ick factor (such as thanking them for allowing Gertie to appear in a bathing dress, but for artistic purposes, nudity would be so much better).

My photography teacher told me that the Victorians were famous for "ghostly" photos by smearing a light layer of fat over the lens, thereby softening the light and the subject.

You know, the more I learn about Dodgson, the more he creeps me out. He reminds me of someone, but I cannot decide whom, and that? Is driving me batty.

That's a fascinating bit about the photography. :)
