Oh good Lord, I'm listening to the new Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy album, in which he does loads of songs from his Palace days in a shiny nashville style. It's really, really weird if you know the originals, but it sounds okay. Until now - he's doing 'I Am a Cinematographer' in a rollicking, cowboy style and it sounds totally and utterly insane. I'll probably think it's cool when I get used to it, but at the moment it's just.....really, really weird. It's kind of scary.

I kind of like it, I think it was the Observer that said that fans would be tearing their hair out and weeping (like the sad, sensitive alt-country kids we are), but I thought lots of the songs sounded like the versions he sometimes does live – really big and rollicking, and just like he's having fun with them.

Also, I saw this great documentary about Johnny Cash a few weeks ago in which someone, commenting on his over-produced country phase, said that it didn't matter what kind of arrangements/embellishment you put around his singing, at its core it still sounded like Cash, and I found myself applying that notion to this album too ...

Yeah, you're right, they do sound like his rollicking live versions - although the arrangements are very, um, lavish. I think it would be less unsettling if he had made an album of new songs with these arrangements - in fact, I'd have definitely loved that. But because I know all these songs and really love most of them, it's very peculiar (although I do like it, and will probably like it more when I get used to it). The version of 'Will You Miss Me When I Burn' was particularly weird, as the original reminds me of sitting out on the back step of my house smoking furtive cigarettes and feeling sorry for myself in third year of college...it wouldn't have been the same with the new singalong chorus!
