sickening news of the day

Good Lord. David Blunkett is charging victims of wrongful imprisonment £3000 a year in "living expenses". Yes, not only do you have to serve decades in prison for a crime you didn't commit, you have to pay the government for the expense of keeping you in prison food and tracksuits. This is so astonishingly disgusting it makes me wonder if David Blunkett even has a soul.

Thanks to audrawilliams for the link.

Heh. My money is on "no", for the "soul" question.

What a total shit. He could have a fine future ahead of him in U.S. politics.

Yeah. Or he could join the Reformatories here in Canada :)

I know! I was reading about this the other day and I just couldn't work out how to post about it, there were so many fucked-up things about the situation. So can kidnappers start charging their victims bed and board now?
Mar. 18th, 2004 10:03 am (UTC)
Well, as long as they feed the victims, I suppose they can!

The whole thing is just so totally insane, it's like something from the Onion.

Dear Lord.

Vincent Hickey, one of the Bridgewater Four who was wrongly convicted for killing a paperboy, was charged £60,000 for the 17 years he spent in jail. He said: “If I had known this I would have stayed on hunger-strike longer, that way I would have had a smaller bill.”

It's sick enough to be satire: I've read saner things in The Onion. I want to find it hilarious, but dear God it's true!

He's doing WHAT!?!?!

Fucking hell, the man has no soul, clearly. He probably has no common sense either. What next - charging people to get into government/council buildings? Billing families of people in prison for the pay for prison staff?

Good grief.

That's one of the most insane things I've ever heard. I have no words. I'm just staring at the keyboard.

I'm just wondering when the folks who held Waite, et al hostage all those years in Beirut will bill the UK government for their hostages' food and board.

Crazy(don't forget the room service charge! aaagh!)Soph

That's...wow. I thought the Labour Party was supposed to be, you know, not quite so money-obsessed, to say the absolute least. This is one of those ideas that just makes you sputter, it's so horrible. And given that these people were robbed of their ability to make a living for however many years, shouldn't the government be paying them?

Mark Thomas wrote about it in his New Statesman column, I can e-mail it to you if you want to read it.
