the men's club

I watched the trailer for the new Stepford Wives film on Apple.com, and while the whole thing looks really glossy and fun, I'm pissed off that it seems to have been turned into - at least, it's being billed as - a comedy. I saw the original film ages and ages ago, and can't remember the exact tone, but I read the book a couple of years ago, and it's really scary. It's also quite explicitly feminist - the horror comes from the fact that the women are being turned into these bland robots, and it's definitely presented as horror. But now, apparently, women being robbed of their personalities and interests and turned into "perfect" babes is just comedy fodder. Bah.

On a much more charming note, my small neighbour Leon just called on the door and presented me with his portrait of Ju Ju, which shows her in two poses: "siting and roning". Awww!

Huh, I remember seeing the first Stepford Wives film, at an impressionable age. A very creepy story, and it inspired me to look up not just the original work, but a few others by the same author. (Fond memories, again for the creepy factor, of This Perfect Day.)

Comedy, huh? Yeah, right. The laughter is all coming from the same people who would decry "political correctness." Irony of ironies, they expect us to laugh at what they tell us is funny.

I heard they were billing it as a dark comedy, and also that it was supposed to be much closer to the book than the original film. So, don't know which is true or if both are.

I do want to see it though when it comes out.

Scan in the pictures! I have to see her 'roning'; it's such a rare sight.

It's so, so cute and funny. But while I can scan it, I don't have webspace on which to post it! I can e-mail it to you, though.

Email it to me and I'll put it where you can link it. It's a work of genius and Must Be Seen.

I saw the trailer, too. It made me feel sick. I can't even think about it. Aieeeee.

The trailer makes it look...aspirational. There's no hint that it's sinister. It's like a freaky "sophisticated" version of Weird Science.

Okay "siting" I get, but "roning"? Unless it means "moaning and groaning and whining and complaining" then I totally understand what pose that is.

Hee, I asked him what it meant, and he looked at me as if I was stupid and said "running!" Hee. Not that she ever does that much...

Ooooooh running. Oh. pffffft.

I've seen pictures of Ju Ju. If that cat ever got past a sulky saunter I'd be mightily surprised.

*says running with a cod-Irish accent*

Oh OK, yeah, I can see that!

I thought he meant "roaming"!
