This amazing article, from Harpers in 1878, is fascinating. I think Sioux babies among themselves may be my favourite caption ever.

The whole thing is, of course, racist in a very odd, naive way.

A somewhat comical characteristic of Indian children is the excessively protuberant abdomen and the thin legs and arms; a fat, chunky boy or girl is a rare sight among these people.

I wonder why! And yes, child starvation is indeed comical.

the effect of bathing seems to be to set the dirt all the more firmly on their begrimed forms. When it does come off, it comes off in scales.

Heavens!

Well, I'll be damned. I used to have quite a few Harpers from the late 1800's (ex was in the antique business). I never thought I'd run into this stuff again. They had quite a few stories like that. Doesn't that picture look like something from Alice in Wonderland?

I haven't seen the one after Smile Time! It was on on Tuesday, but my video buggered the tape so I'll have to wait until Saturday night's repeat.

And, your kind package never arrived! Boo. Crappy An Post.

You. Must. Get. Broadband!

Well, it could just as easily be crappy USPS... chances are it'll arrive four or five months from now having been put in the "surface book" channel, i.e. a slooow cargo container ship across the Atlantic. Anyhoo, it doesn't matter so much - you're only 3 eps behind the US or so anyway.
