wild babies! (think of it sung/shouted to the refrain of Duran Duran's 'Wild Boys'...)

This amazing article, from Harpers in 1878, is fascinating. I think Sioux babies among themselves may be my favourite caption ever.

The whole thing is, of course, racist in a very odd, naive way.

A somewhat comical characteristic of Indian children is the excessively protuberant abdomen and the thin legs and arms; a fat, chunky boy or girl is a rare sight among these people.

I wonder why! And yes, child starvation is indeed comical.

the effect of bathing seems to be to set the dirt all the more firmly on their begrimed forms. When it does come off, it comes off in scales.
