...I learned that from my father...

Fuck, tonight's Angel was good.

I was so surprised when Connor appeared! I was totally unspoiled, and although I kind of recognised his parents, I wasn't sure what episode they'd been in before. And then we heard the voice, and poor old Angel looked around... sniff. All the Angel-Connor stuff was really touching and sad, especially the very end.

And I loved the bit where Connor got his memory back and flipped over Sahjan. Then when he got up and was looking over at him, smiling kind of dangerously...that was very cool. I really like it when characters suddenly realise their power - like when Buffy stops being all girly at Halloween. In fact, I'm presuming the resemblance to that scene was intentional. Aww, why does the Buffyverse have to end? Why?!

Yes! Connor, eeeeee! And Sahjan! (I always sort of liked him).

But I've missed the last three weeks because I was working on Tuesday evenings, so I was all "Who's the blue-haired girl?" "Fred's dead?" "Hit Spike some more, blue-haired girl!" (It's the same actress as Fred, isn't it?)

Yes! Damn, I had the episode in which she died on video, and I think I recorded over it. Yeah, this dreadful demon was unleashed - by Knox, which was cool, and which provided one of the few good creepy moments of the episode - and took over Fred, and she died at the end - which was actually very well done and very sad - and then the demon, Illyria, took over her body. Hence the blue hair. Illyria wanted to raise her ancient armies. but they were all dead, and basically because she looks like Fred Wesley wanted to "help her adjust to our world", rather creepily.

And it was, indirectly, Gunn's fault, because the thing he signed to keep his mental powers was the customs form which got the demon's vessel into the building (although he didn't know what it was at the time). So when the gang got Lindsay out of hell, Gunn basically volunteered to take his place. Hence he was being tortured. Poor Gunn.

Phew! Do you feel all caught-up, now?

To be fair, the helping came after a somewhat spirited, ruthless and very almost succesful effort on Wesley's part to kill Illyria... :) And it was a great Buffyverse moment when Wesley popped Knox right after Angel's "All Lives Are Sacred" speech...

Oh, fucking hell! I fell asleep and missed the end. And I forgot I had, and now I've read about it and... grrr. But it was very good before that, yes.

How much did you miss? Did you see Connor getting his memory back?

Actually, it looks like I missed almost half of it! I got up to page 7 of the TWoP recap, where Angel is training Connor, and then I stop remembering. I think I should probably tape the repeat on Saturday. I know I sort-of saw some of the end but it made no sense.

Argh. Should have just taped it and gone to bed.

As an ex-fan of the Buffy-verse (particularly Angel), I've watched a few episodes back to back to try and see what was going on.

And it makes even less since than it did when I last watched it on a weekly basis - it seems to me that as soon as Conor came along, the whole thing went nuts...I didn't like the show after that point, and while I would say it's marginally better now, it's still not the same as it was when it started.

I also liked how it opened up the Connor character considerably: psychotic we can handle (witness Faith), but endlessly grumpy is very limiting and ultimately annoying (considering the parallel example of Buffy is left as an exercise for the reader :) ). If we can assume (based on what Illyria said about the permanent secondary effects of the memory replacement) that Connor is now not an inherently psychotic grump, but is instead a likeable, somewhat dorky, smart arse along the lines of early Xander or late Dawn, he becomes much easier to watch: however, he's undoutably going through a version of what Wes is facing upon having his memory restored, thus supplying the neccessary fucked-upness that lies at the heart of the best Buffyverse characters. That episode was surprising to me because it made me want to see more of Connor: while I was never a Connor-hater, I believe he served a specific story purpose and I wasn't unhappy to see him go, in the way I was over, say, Doyle's or Cordy's exit.

I think the resemblance to Buffy was intentional too, but I was reminded more of her memory restoration after Willow's spell backfired in Season Six. The comparison is not favorable to Buffy: Connor gets his shit together, is able (at least so far) to integrate this new reality into his life, and even manages to handle Angel with grace, dignity and even love in a way that was forever beyond Pschyo!Connor. Buffy just descended back into the old plotline of "Buffy struggles to come to terms with her power."

Also, did you notice that Meredes McNab is now a regular? Amber Benson's gotta be pissed -- it took her what, three seasons to be featured in the title sequence just once...

In fairness, Mercedes McNab has now been in the onscreen Buffyverse longer than anyone except Angel himself, so she's earned her title credit!

And that's a good point about the difference and similarities between newly-memoried Connor and 'Tabula Rasa' Buffy - that didn't strike me before! I too like the new Connor much more than the old - I hope he gets to come back before - sniff - it's all over...

I hadn't fully realised this until now, but you're right -- I think she was even in The Bizarre Unaired Pilot With The Wrong Willow. That could actually make her onscreen presence even longer than Boreneaz: I don't think he was in the Unaired Pilot, but I could be wrong.

I doubt Connor will be back Before The End, but it was a great way to both resolve a huge dangly from Season Four and, significantly, set Connor up for future development. If Whedon's horizon only extended to to the end of this season, Angel would have prevented Connor from regaining his memory in an attempt to protect him, but, deprived of his fighting skills, Connor would have died, fueling Angel's angst. Remember how Season Seven Buffy burnt through a huge chunk of its established characters for maximum impact (e.g. Jonathon, Hally, Anya)? Whedon's being much smarter about the Angel end game than he was about the Buffy end game (with a glaring exception that we'll have to talk about in a few weeks :) ).

I predict a TV movie, wherein Connor gets over his thing for the older ladies and he and Dawn start Getting It On: a Dawn and Connor baby would be just the ultimate magnet for Mystical Whoosiewhatsits.

Hee! Wouldn't it just? God, I'd love to see that.

And, now you're making me nervous! I don't want this to all end craply..
