Grrrrrrr. So, I've figured out why I can't send mail - I have to change the outgoing server to an eircom one. That's fine. Or it would be, if I could do it! I still can't view my mail preferences, and it's driving me mad. There's no apparent reason for it. And of course, such a freakish problem isn't included on the ridiculous Mac support site, and of course Mac don't have a tech support line (actually, they do, and if you've had your computer for more than two months you've got to pay fifty quid for a consultation). I don't know what to do, apart from giving up on OSX Mail and installing Outlook Express instead. Help me, Mac tech people! If you can...

I may have missed something crucial, so apologies if you've already had this and it's no use. When you're in Mail, click on 'Mail' in the top left corner of the screen, and then go to 'Preferences'. Within that you should be able to click on the drop down menu for the SMTP outgoing mail server bit, and you can add new mail servers there.

If, however, your problem is more fundamental, sorry for not being more use!

Heh, I'm afraid you missed the fact that my problem is that I can't view the preferences! I know how to change the servers, but when I click on preferences it just shows my e-mail filter lists, not the preferences. I can't seem to find any way of viewing the preferences window, and it's driving me mad!

OK, sorry :o) Still being ridiculously fundamental... you are in the 'accounts' tab within preferences, yes? And have you tried the classic method of re-starting everything?

No, don't apologise! I'm sorry if I sounded snotty, I'm afraid I'm not describing my ailment, I'm afraid. The thing is, I can't actually get to the accounts tab - when I click on preferences it just shows the "rules editor" for my filters, and nothing else, not even the tabs for anything else. So I can't see any account information. Oh, the frustration! Crazy iBook!

If you only see your email lists, and no other toolbar-style buttons which say General, Accounts, Junk Mail, etc, then you managed to hide your toolbar by accident. Look at the Preferences window title bar. There, wau over on the other side to the regular circular close, minimise, maximise buttons will be a grey oblong button. Click it. Your toolbar will re-appear. Press "Accounts" then type in right info in the outgoing server area.

I haven't actually used Mail, but I shall ask Steve when he gets in, and see if he knows what the problem is. I can't think why it won't let you see the Mail preferences. Weird.

Try this:

Go to your Applications folder on your harddrive. Then go to Utilities, launch the Disk Utility application run the Verify and Repair disk permissions on your harddrive. You may just have a broken fork in your Mail program.
