stinky

There is a weird smell in my house.

I don't know what's causing it, and I don't know where exactly it's coming from. But it's been lingering around the sitting room and kitchen for about a week, and it's starting to freak me out. Has Ju Ju puked or pooed somewhere invisible to the naked eye? Did someone leave a sandwich in a bag and leave that bag hidden somewhere around the house for weeks? The thing is, there really isn't anywhere for this smell-producer to be hidden - our house doesn't have that much crap in it, and I've looked under the couch and behind the piano and behind the bookshelves. And there's nothing! Except the smell! Which is a horrible sort of....organic smell. It smells like something going off, is what it smells like. And I can't find it.

I should note that this is not a repeat of the last time I was troubled with an unidentifiable domestic odour, in Berlin in 1995, which turned out to be because we'd left the washing machine stuffed with the wet clothes of the family who had sublet it to us and the clothes had all rotted. Our washing machine is fine. The smell, however, isn't.

Have you bought any potatoes recently? Because when the go off, they go off. As in, smells like something died off.

This happened to me and it literally took me ransacking the house looking for the smell before I figured out that the recently bought potatoes were the evil culprits.

I did buy potatoes last week! And they are sitting in a large paper bag in the kitchen! But they seem totally fresh (thanks to the paper-ness of the bag) - I made potato wedges yesterday and the contents of the bag smells fine. And it doesn't seem to be the source of the smell (I've literally been wandering around the house sniffing). But it does seem like the most likely culprit, so thanks!

Can you borrow someone's dog for a few minutes? I bet a dog would go right for whatever's making the smell.

I don't know what sort of stove you have, but if it has the liftable top on it (for cleaning and such) check to see if any liquid or other spills from cooking have collected under it. Happened to me once.

Also, check behind or under the stove and refrigerator: there may be a bit of vegetable that got punted under there by your insane cat.

I agree about the potatoes too.

Have you checked to see if there are any dead bodies under the patio? this happens more often than you think...

When young sister & I were school-goers living at home, we noticed a foul smell in my mother's car. She convinced us it was just the carburettor (sp?); weeks later, we discovered it was, in fact, some very old fish decomposing under the front seat.

Just a story for you!

Also, I have written you in for Friday 17th & it turns out I was right to do so, as I have launches every other night that week!

You haven't been stuffing bits of fish you don't want to eat down the back of the vegetable rack again, have you? That was the source of a very impressive smell, if I remember correctly.

Ok, so you were two the last time you did it, but old habits die hard...
