50p and a bunch of grapes

I just finished Sue Townsend's new book Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction. Go and read it. It's very, very funny, and it's very, very sad. I cried quite a bit at the end.

Sue Townsend is also one of the nicest people I've ever interviewed; I think she has a special place in the hearts of most of us who grew up on this side of the Atlantic in the '80s. I don't think I know anyone who didn't read the first two books at a relatively early age, and they definitely worked their way into our psyches. Red socks, Playschool and even The Second Sex automatically make me think of Adrian Mole. And my friends and I still have a tendency to make joking references to someone doing anything for "50p and a bunch of grapes." And my signed copy of the first book is one of my genuinely prized possessions.

I adore Adrian Mole too - I used to think of him every time I shopped in Sainsbury's - his comment on their nicer class of customer and the vicar buying purple 3 ply toilet paper who could have bought shiny white and given the difference to the poor. My son Jake, who is 13 and a third, has just discovered Adrian and we have had a lot of questions about the olden days of the 1980s reviving lots of happy memories for me.
Ho Hum - off to sing Greenham Common songs while peeling the spuds.

Hee, yes! Another reference which stuck in my head. God, I think I could quote entire paragraphs of that book if I tried.

I think I first read Adrian Mole when I was about 10 and thought he was really rather grown-up. So now when I re-read I get to laugh at my tiny self as well as Mole.
