Oh my god, the stupid fucking moron just edited it to include "paddy"! I don't know whether to laugh or well, launch another little attack.

Hee! I can't believe s/he thought, after reading your comment, that it would be a good idea to remove one racial slur and put in another one!

Stupid lasts a lifetime!

Aaargh. How is it that people still think like this? How, I ask?

Ooh, vaguely relevant to this whole discussion - when Helen was over here, she met the Pied Piper, who dashed across to Dublin a month or so ago to "get her man back" - a guy from Dublin who she met in Australia who is now working in Leeds. Anyway, we had a brief chat about him, and about where in Dublin he's from, and then after she went out, Helen stared for a second, and then said, "Does she call her boyfriend Irish?" As in, she uses "Irish" as a nickname - Irish did this, Irish is doing that, Irish is going to come and see me next week. Because, you know, he's Irish.

I have to say, that strikes me as incredibly old-fashioned, and totally reminiscent of Irish experience in the UK thirty or forty years ago. The only thing I can think of is that it's because they got to know each other in Australia, where there are fewer Irish people and it's therefore a more likely nickname. Connor gets called "Irish" on Neighbours occasionally. But, yes. Bless the Pied Piper.

I don't know that I've heard it much, but we just can't bloody help ourselves sometimes here. Why use someone's real name when you could make something up? Or better still, cut it short and add a "y" to the end?

I have to admit that I call Pete "Irish Pete" when I'm talking about him to other people. Mind, it's only to differentiate him from, er, English Pete. And Army Pete. And Loser Pete. And Old Pete.

I have got to start dating people with different names.

Heh, I think using someone's nationality to distinguish them from their namesakes is okay!

I know (seriously) about 15 people called Paul, which was obviously a freakishly popular name in Ireland in the mid-70s, and if there was any way of distinguishing them apart from always refering to them by their full names, I would do it.

How utterly bizarre.

Argh!

It would be unneccessary and merely gilding the lily for me to jump in over there as well, wouldn't it? Yes, that's what I thought.

But I think I'll do it anyway.

Reading the comments, am I right in thinking she originally had "nips" in that list? Jesus.

Yes, she did! Unbelievable.

And, do step in! The only representatives of our fair country there at the moment are sisters, after all, so there needs to be a bit more variety.

Plus, jumping in is lots and lots of fun, what with the righteous indignation and the moral high ground and all.

My favourite comment in the whole thing is:

my bf says it. He's the one that actually notices such things, so I figure he knows.

Way to win an argument. I must start trying it.

Actually, my main problem with that comment (it's the exact equivalent of wonderlanded's "I see your ancestors and raise you the person I'm sleeping with" comment, after all) was that she didn't seem to have noticed that in a community called hp_britglish she was posting to someone in the UK rather than the US. It's possible that there isn't too much anti-Chinese racism if you're mixed-race, middle class and in the right part of the USA, but why on earth she should think that extends to the UK...
