I've just replied, so I am awaiting the articulate and reasoned response, which will no doubt be aloing the lines of "yoo fukkin slagggg!"

Silly daegaer - slag isn't a racial slur! Your entire well reasoned comment is therefore invalidated.

I'm far too engrossed in all the comments to that post now.

Me too. *is absorbed*

I happen to be a proud denizen of Slagonia! I feel deeply offended in my Slagian core.
Dec. 10th, 2004 03:39 am (UTC)
Good God, I can't believe these people exist.

And in my country, too! I'm cross on behalf of all Australians. Well, all other Australians, anyway.

Sorry for invoking your name as the Token Reasonable Australian! I hope that wasn't too cheeky.

Heh. I stomped in there all "I bloody participated in that discussion dammit, didn't anyone notice?" and then had a great "Hey! Mary noticed!" moment.

I'm going to have a shirt made wtih "Token Reasonable Australian" on it. That will be awesome.

I had a tshirt with "Token Straight Girl" on it and I went out and kissed a girl for the first time the very first time I wore it. So you might find that the second you put it on, you become totally Unreasonable...
Dec. 10th, 2004 09:29 am (UTC)
Because... the fact that you've always done something... means it's right? Huh?

Personally, I'd say the chum is a lot more moronic.

I am holding my fingers away from the keyboard to stop myself from replying to the last post in the thread. "teach the children". Isn't that what's happening? They're both still in school, people are telling them the terms they're using are wrong and offensive, ergo "teaching the children".

Hee. I had the same impulse. I'm waiting until I can phrase it politely.

And, it's working. The original poster has taken the advice of biascut and myself, and has posted a simple and straightforward apology. I think she really should be given the benefit of the doubt now. Her friend, mind you, seems a little over eager to prove what a hard bitch she is. (Funny how she seems to understand that those terms were racist when we were being assured they weren't). Ah, the youth of today!

Very good point, and you are all better people than I. I'm going to go and edit my original comment now, in which I pointed out that countering racial slurs with a sexist slur was a fantaaaastic strategy.

Yeah, and I started the comment with "Um". Heh.
Dec. 10th, 2004 04:58 am (UTC)
I know! Because after all, if something comes naturally, then it can't possibly be wrong, can it?

I'm not bothering with the friend. As daegaer says, the original poster seemed willing to engage and actually modified her position based on our responses. The vibe from the friend is totally different. Just - aaargh.
