the best years of our life

1. What year was it? 1992-1993

2. What were your three favourite bands?
Belly. Suede. Blur (it was the Modern Life is Rubbish era. Ah, how I loved them then...)

3. What was your favourite outfit?
Short floral frock from Miss Selfridge worn over long-sleeved black top, with black tights and Docs/ Long flowery skirts and big jumpers and Docs.

4. What was up with your hair?
Bwahahahaha! That was the time I was sorely tempted to bleach it in the manner of my then-style icon, Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland. I didn't. Instead, it was long, bushy, and dyed some cheapo shade of dark red. The day after I finished my Leaving, I hacked it all off and had a bob.

5. Who were your best friends?
Jennifer, Miriam, and Louise. All of whom I am still friends with - in fact, I went out with the latter on Friday night.

6. What did you do after school?
Stood outside Miriam's gate talking rubbish for hours before walking home, where I would watch Home and Away, read, write angsty diary entries, listen to whatever the NME told me was cool, and possibly talk to one of the aforementioned friends on the phone for ages.

7. Did you take the bus? No.

8. Who did you have a crush on?
A boy who went on to become a relatively successful musician.

9. Did you fight with your parents?
Yes. Not seriously. Lots of tantrums, though.

10. Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
Bernard Butler from Suede.

11. Did you smoke cigarettes?
No.

12. Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
Huh? Why would I be too nervous to find my locker? No, I dumped lots of things in the locker every morning, but my locker was in our form room, so I couldn't get to it between classes.

13. Did you have a 'clique'?
Kind of, if by "clique" one means "a bunch of friends, both close and casual, who sometimes did things together outside school".

14. Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly and Slater?
Yes, and every so often Screech would come in and DJ. No, not really. Although we did spend a lot of time on Saturday afternoons in Dunkin' Donuts at the end of Grafton Street.

15. Admit it, were you popular?
Meh, kind of. I was well-liked, I think. I had a bunch of good friends and I suppose we were among the "cool" kids in my class.

16. Who did you want to be just like?
I don't think I really wanted to be like any specific person, actually. I was all inspired and fired up by bands like Huggy Bear and Bikini Kill, and writers like Angela Carter and Susan Faludi.

17. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A writer or an illustrator.

18. Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now? Doing what I'm doing now. Only richer. And, now I come to think of it, 29 seemed very old back then, so I probably thought I'd be married with kids by now. Yikes.

I am quite surprised at how many people on my friends list did not recognise this meme's Saved By the Bell reference. Were my sisters, friends and I the only people who laughed at (not with) it in the early '90s on this side of the Atlantic?

Ha ha!!! You totally are lame. But I love it. I thought briefly about the "Zack" thing, but I didn't know it was Maxx with two Xs.
