waiting for the giro*

Although I feel Jennifer Weiner's pain, it's strangely comforting to know that successful novelists are sometimes, just sometimes, in the same boat as me.

*A prize (well, my esteem) to whomever can identify that quotation. Actually, that'll probably be a lot of you, but never mind.

I found it!
Waiting for the Giro

Thursday September 30th, 1982

The pantry door creaks showing empty Fablon shelves.
The freezer echoes with mournful electrical whirrings.
The boy goes ragged trousered to chool.
The woman waits at the letterbox.
The bills line up behind the clock.
The dog whimpers empty-bellied in sleep.
The building society writes letters penned in vitriol.
The house waits, waits, waits,
Waits for the giro.

Re: I found it!
*gasps in impressed amazement* Hurrah and brava! Ooh, I wish I really did have a prize to give you now.

I read the book first when I was about ten and I didn't know exactly what a giro was (although obviously I knew it had something to do with money). This is probably why the word "giro" reminds me of Adrian Mole to this very day....

I think it's one of Adrian Mole's literary efforts?

Damnit, I really need to get my Adrian Mole books back. And I really need to stop lending books to people who don't return them!
