pretty pictures

The icon question meme, stolen from daegaer, birdsflying and others.

"I love looking at people's icons, but I don't always *get* them - I often wonder stuff like, "Who's that guy?" or "Where's that quote from?" but I tend not to ask, for various reasons. So come on, here are my icons. Pick one (or more!) you're curious about, and I'll try to explain it. Or at least explain what I like about it."

Well, "Bertie you fecker" of course. Is that a coffin? Is this something to do Ye Olde Irish Politics?

Bwahahahahaha! No, not a coffin - it's a tent at the Reading festival! My sister Jenny and her friends decided to decorate their tent with a roll of masking tape which one of them found in her rucksack. They ended up covering it in really stupid, specifically Irish phrases - including this one, which they found so amusing Jenny photographed it with her camera-phone and e-mailed it to me. It's refering to Bertie Ahern, our dreadful taoiseach. Who really is a fecker.

I always thought it was a coffin too! I did know who Bertie was. Hee!

Who's the got hope lady?
Mar. 3rd, 2005 08:47 pm (UTC)
She's Hopey Glass, "punk-rock lesbian" and one of the heroines of the greatest comic ever (that would be Love and Rockets). Jaime Hernandez is, by far, the best male writer (and illustrator) of female characters I've ever read. He's also my favourite comic book illustrator by miles and miles. Here's an interview with him and his also insanely talented brother Beto. If I ever get a book published, my dream would be to get Jaime Hernandez to do the cover. Whatever the subject of the book. I just love him.

Where is the "I'm in the band" one from? For some reason, I feel like I ought to know, and I can't place it.

It's Lane, from Gilmore Girls, who is my favourite TV character. She's cute and smart and a huge, huge music geek and I just love her.

What about the My Bloody Valentine and the Alice Liddell ones?
Mar. 4th, 2005 11:04 am (UTC)
The bloody valentine one is an image by Dame Darcy, whose artwork I adore. The only piece of good original art I own is one of her pieces (which I bought online).

The Alice Liddell one is from a photo by Julia Margaret Cameron, hte 19th century photographer - I went to an exhibition of her work in the National Portrait Gallery in London last year, and it was just amazing - like photos of ghosts. This one is of Alice Liddell as an adult, who of course became famous as a child as the model for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. I wanted a Cameron icon and I decided to take a bit from that photo because it was so strange and ghostly.

Your current one - naughty little sister. It's less that I don't know it as I *should* know it. Where's it from (and did Noel Streafeild write the book?)
Mar. 4th, 2005 11:06 am (UTC)
Heh, sadly she didn't. "My Naughty Little Sister" was a bold small girl who was the creation of Dorothy Edwards, and the wonderful illustrations were by Shirley Hughes (who also did this icon, which I'm using as an example rather than an expression of crossness!) who illustrated several of Streatfeild's books.

Ah, that explains it. Hughes's style is very distinctive.

Hey! I've never seen you post with the Mame one. I heart Auntie Mame.

Are you a secret absinthe drinker and signallling it in your icons?!
