look who it is

I would just like to formally announce that, as of now, I am no longer a Catholic, lapsed or otherwise.

Well. Isn't that just grand?

Unbelieveable.

I left the church well over 15 years ago, and it still caused my heart to sink through the floor. And they were clearly united in this one, or it wouldn't have happened so fast.

I just want to cry.

It was, what, the fourth ballot? That is quite speedy.

I'm surprised at how upset I am. I haven't been a practicing Catholic for well over ten years, but I still feel genuinely horrified and, yes, tearful.

Same here, all of it. I did not expect to be so upset! How could they do this?

Me too. I'm trying to get a paper to bed and this had to happen.

Me too - 5 years lapsed and still very sad about this. I had hoped for better times.

Same here. B. (who was raised by raving atheists, to the extent that various of his dad's more religious colleagues thought it was a Sign From God when B. won a class raffle to go on a school trip to Lourdes) was asking me last night why I was so enraged about and why I was taking it personally, and I think that's why. It still feels like it has something to do with me, even though I haven't been practising for years now.

At least you've settled that matter with yourself.

It's a faint glimmer of something positive, but there's not much else positive in the news (other than him being 78).

Yes, I thought beforehand, well, provided it's not Ratzinger, I can live with it. And doesn't he look so indecently triumphant on the BBC website?

barsine and I were actually joking via text about "oooh, what if it's Ratzinger?" But we seriously didn't think it would be. And then it was! It was such a horrible shock.

And god, yeah, he really does look triumphant, the horrible old Nazi (well, former Hitler Jugend member).

You know, I never was a Catholic, ever, and yet I feel punched in the stomach by this one too. Being Irish has made me culturally Catholic to some extent, somehow - it doesn't feel like Bush getting elected, it feels personal, and awful.
