babe i'm on fire

Thanks to Liza Picard's excellent Dr Johnson's London, I now know of the prodigous appetites of Georgian infants. For example, one twelve month-old baby mentioned in a contemporary book about baby cuisine apparently feasted on half a "handsome chicken" a day, as well as tea and bread and butter. An even greedier baby, just five months older than the chicken-gorger, dined daily on "toast and ale". I bow to no one in my admiration of the Modern Baby (especially those belonging to cangetmad, blue_monday, agentz, radegund and missbassey, to name but a few). But could the Modern Baby pack away all that? I think not.* Infants of the 18th Century, I salute you!

*Except for those scary tragic giant babies that always used to appear on the Jenny Jones Show.

Ye gods. A half a chicken (whatever a "handsome chicken" actually is). Toast and ale? Eesh.

Gnome manages quite well with her milk and mushed up fruit and veg and things. I suppose feeding the baby ale might make them sleep though.

It's the medicines described in that book that really get to me. With mercury being prescribed for almost everything, I do sometimes wonder how anybody survived any illness at all!

Oh, and the food additives.

Jordan recently came in to the very, very posh clothes shop where a friend of my sister Busta J is manager and bought a lot of fancy stuff for Harvey. And the clothes were sized age 12-14! The kid is only about three. It's pretty tragic really.

That is really awful. I'm very torn in feeling extremely sorry for her, or being vilely priggish about how she was during her pregnancy. I'll go for the feeling sorry for her.
