stop the world, i want to get off.

How the fuck is this happening in the richest country in the world?

I can't watch any more footage of it. That woman begging for help from Bush was just too upsetting. As are all the racist wingnuts who seem to be delighting in the misfortune of poor black refugees, or are announcing that Katrina is God's punishment for New Orleans's "decadence".

Oh my god. Oh god. I... no. Can't read. For some reason, the suffering of old people always breaks my heart and is more, much more than I can deal with. Christ.

Don't watch any of it. It is horrendous looking at the web, and I've been deliberately avoiding looking at the news TV, I dread to think what that's like.

I haven't seen a bit of televised footage, over the web or anything. Text and the occasional photo is more than enough to make me weep.

It's bad. It's really bad. Politicians are cursing on the phone, begging for help, and berating those in DC who have not done enough.

Trucks are moving into New Orleans with MREs and other supplies, but all you hear is true, and worse.

It's outrageous. An absolute fucking disgrace. The only thing that assuages the pain a little is doing something to help the people who have arrived here in Texas seeking a place to stay. A church in my neighborhood is doing a donation drive tomorrow morning for toiletries, diapers, clothing, infant formula, to give to those stranded here in Austin. The school district here has opened one of its auditoriums for people who managed to evacuate ahead of the storm, but have used up all their money on hotel expenses. So I'm going to head over there on Monday, a holiday, and see what I can do to help out. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to take it any more.

You know we've gone through the looking glass when the only public official who has stepped up to the plate has been Texas Governor Rick Perry. I don't agree with the guy on anything politically, but he has opened the doors of the state to those who have nowhere to go.

I'm not sure the US merits the title of the richest country in the world. That would imply some kind of common fate, common wealth, social contract thing which we increasingly seem to be lacking. It might be more accurate to say that because of its wealth-friendly tax laws, it is home to many of the richest people in the world, who drive the average up; and has a large upper middle class and many rich communities, but not that much wealth held genuinely in common.

It's not just New Orleans. Remember that other parts of Louisians got smacked, too, as well as Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Their trouble isn't as severe, but it's still trouble. Everyone's busy fussing over NOLA, and ignoring Biloxi, Mobile, etc.

This is VERY true. And a damn fucking shame.
