Poor little tourists (scroll down).
The tourists are an afterthought here," said Bill Hedrick, from Houston, who had been in the city on business.

"We're appalled," said Jill Johnson, a 53-year-old from Saskatoon. "This city is built on tourism, and we're their last priority."

You know, that just might be because YOU STILL HAVE HOMES TO GO TO. Jesus Christ. Ordinarily I'd feel sorry for people stuck in such a dreadful situation who are unable to get home, but to act like you've got more right to help than people who have lost every single thing they own? Pricks.

They keep believing we are really a country or something and we keep shipping their butts off to Syria and leaving them to be raped and starved and die of thirst. AND we let Ann Coulter talk smack about them.

If they had any damn sense, they'd send in troops.

Unfortunately, this situation has brought out the worst in a lot of people. Everyone's desperate, and few residents of first-world countries really know how to go into survival mode. However, private donations are pouring in from all over the country (all over the world, too), and the Red Cross and Salvation Army are down there.

There was some bitching that the Canadians didn't offer help fast enough, but who ever thinks that they'll be in a position to offer aid to the U.S.?

What I heard, actually, was that a number of countries offered aid to the US but Bush turned them down at first. (I can't confirm the truth of this -- he is accepting it now.)

I heard that too; there was a link in one of my friends' journals yesterday. The story was basically that Canada wanted to send rescue helicopters but the US refused to let them cross the border.

I do hope you're right and that the help is getting in now.

(nods) It's coming in. EVERYONE is extremely upset at the Federal reaction -- at the exact minute I was typing this, they had a clip of Donald Trump on an Entertainment Tonight broadcast saying that "The Federal response has been a total disaster."

I think that once things settle a bit there are going to be some very hard questions soon.

Of course, there is one other way to get out of the city.

Walk.

Got me. All I'm saying is, people all over the world, in war torn areas, walk dozens of miles to refugee camps. These guys have hotels to stay in, and they're complaining?

I can't find the section you quoted (maybe the link moved) but I don't have a lot of sympathy for tourists either. It would be a horrible situation, but once they get out of New Orleans, they can go home and go back to their lives. The residents can't.

(Plus, unlike many residents, tourists presumably had the money and resources to leave before the storm.)

Here in Oz we've had pouty Aussie tourists complaining that our government didn't do anything to rescue them.
A) What were they supposed to do?
B) You're tourists, you went on holiday, you took a risk. You sort it out yourselves! The Aussie govt isn't responsible for every damn problem you get yourself into, and the US govt has got its own people to worry about.
C) They were in a bloody hotel. There were people dead or with their homes destroyed, but these guys are pissed off that they're stuck in shelter and safety and their holiday was spoiled. There's just no sense of perspective.
D) No, really, what was our govt supposed to actually do for a bunch of people who were pretty well off compared to god only knows how many other people who were in real danger?

Ugh. Whiners.
