Last year, in some sort of Christmas miracle, I actually got all my Christmas shopping done really early. This was because I knew exactly what everyone wanted and, more importantly, bought a lot of my presents online. This year, however, I haven't a clue what to get anyone. It's terrible. I have horrible visions of running around the shops on Christmas Eve and still got getting anything. My mind is a blank. Patsington says he wants me to pay for half of an expensive mike stand, but what sort of present for one's beloved is half a mike stand? I mean, really.

Also, I am still sick. But not as sick as I was yesterday, and I managed to get my piece for work finished. So although I can't go in and eat pancakes with my chums, I can sit on the couch and drink tea and watch Coronation Street. Cold comfort, but comfort nevertheless.

I share your pain. But then, I read a glurgy thing on the online that put it into perspective: the reason I can't think of anything for anyone is because no-one I love is sick or in need. That cheered me up... for about as long as it takes for me to draw up the list.

Vouchers for businesses we like, such as Anthology?

How about a little escape for both of you, like a night or two in the Wicklow mountains? Somewhere driveable, so it wouldn't be too much effort or extra outlay, but still sweet and special? Or is that kinda lame?

JMack wants a bonsai tree. But now I feel all the adventure has gone out of the shopping, even though that is an ACTUAL present which is a good idea. As for family presents, though, I am STUMPED.

Sorry you still feel shite. I'm still run down, but I'm better than yesterday, so I can assure you, if you rest well, the lurgy will not floor you for too long, though it does seem set to linger a little while.

I have done exactly no shopping this year so far. I've never gotten to December without even one present purchased, not in years and years. The list shrank a lot this year, but so did my vacation travel plans, and thus I have no funny t-shirts from random places for my niece & nephew, and no mustard from Iowa for my father. I'm not exactly upset about this, but it's another level of stress I just don't need.

Everyone is getting gift certificates, I think. I only have to figure out from where.

I'm really lucky because a) my family doesn't do presents so I don't need to ship anything and b) everyone over here I'm giving presents to is getting a stuffed Ganesh, or whatever I pick up in India for them.

As for half a mike stand - if it's what he wants, it's the best present ever, and then you can get a cute little gift to go along with it?

You are an admirable woman.

Also: everybody this year gets gift cards from us. I am Vast with Sprog and in Discomfort. I shall not shop.

Freddie Mercury managed to do quite a lot with half a mike stand.
