stellanova:1 lacey scarf:0

I have beaten the lace scarf! I may be speaking too soon, but I appear to have conquered its tricksy ways, although admittedly I only did this by forgoing my usual knitting accompaniment, Radio 4. I had been knitting while listening online to the (excellent, to my faint surprise, as I thought it sounded schmalzy) adaptation of R. L. Delderfield's To Serve Them All My Days, which ran every day last week in the Afternoon Play slot. But it was too interesting and moving, and I got quite caught up in the drama, so I kept losing my place in the pattern, and making mistakes, and forgetting whether I'd just ssk'ed. So I have to admit that I can only do this pattern with no distractions like exciting radio dramas. Bah. But! My concentration has paid off, and I have now knitted about seven inches of lovely scarf, and I keep holding it up to the light to admire its pattern, which I think is becoming slightly annoying to my housemates (Me: Look! It's like a tree! Isn't it gorgeous? I can't believe I made it! LOOK AT IT, EVERYONE!). I just hope the excitement doesn't wear off before I've knitted enough of it to wear....

I will! Although that will probably be in about a year, as it takes quite a long time to get anywhere with it....

So so true. When I was last knitting lace (that very same pattern, in fact), by the time I'd finished G made me promise not to do lace again for a while, because I wouldn't talk to him while I was knitting. (G: "Ooh, shall we watch that film tonight?", Me: "Counting. Can't. Talk.")

Hee! I know, I was exactly the same. I made the mistake of thinking I could knit it while talking and then made a hideous mistake which ended up with me randomly casting on a few stitches to replace the ones I'd just got rid of. I have to say, though, that it has got easier as I go along, although I'm not going to risk knitting it while listening to the radio/talking/chatting again...

Heh, I tried knitting lace on Saturday night while talking AND HAVING CONSUMED ABOUT THREE GLASSES OF WINE. I actually didn't make any mistakes (that I've noticed, it all looks fairly presentable) but I kept thinking I had and going back and counting veeeeeery carefully and unknitting a bit and then knitting a bit and .... lather, rinse, repeat. Never again!

That sounds beautiful... you should post a pic of your progress so far. zoje_george taught me to knit before she left, and now I'm working on my very first (very simple) cabled scarf. So, I'm impressed that you're knitting lace -- it seems like it would be rather intricate and difficult.
