HUZZAH AND HURRAH! There will be a new book about the Pirates! in September! And Gideon Defoe's fancy new website has an extract! This bit has rendered me weak with laughter:
The Captain shook his head. ‘Icebergs. You know, if I didn’t already have that fiend Black Bellamy as a nemesis, I think the position could very well be taken by icebergs.’

‘They’re certainly a nuisance,’ said the pirate with a scarf.

‘I don‘t like the way you can‘t see their eyes,’ added the Captain grimly. ‘There‘s something really malevolent about that, don‘t you think?’

‘Um. Icebergs aren’t creatures, Pirate Captain.’

‘Well what in the Pirate King’s name are they then?’

‘It’s when water freezes.’

The Pirate Captain’s eyes widened. ‘This is what I like about life at sea. It’s one long voyage of discovery. Solid water! What will they think of next? Hopefully a pony who solves crimes.

I am counting the days until this book comes out. Counting the days, I tell you! The first two pirate books are probably the funniest things I've ever read in my life, particularly the Adventure with Whaling, which made me laugh so much I almost had an asthma attack and had to lie down to recover.

The entire website is pretty great. I particularly like the Meet the Pirates section ("the pirate in green is an everyman. He is also quite tidy. If they were to make a sitcom of the pirates in the 1970s he would be played by Richard Beckinsale."). Vive les Pirates!

I'm not sure the book deserves an entire Eee either, but it will have a fancy red spine, and a picture of a bear on the back, if that counts for anything. And I remember from my brief two month period of going to a gym that working out is usually a great source of anecdotes, especially if you can manage to actually *fall off* a rowing machine, which is harder than it sounds. I might join one again just to fill up my livejournal.

I have never tried to fall off a rowing machine (I think I did try to use a rowing machine once, a long time ago, with limited success), but it does seem like it would be a pretty challenging proposition, what with them being low to the ground and all that. I work out at home so that I can keep my anecdotes to myself, or, in a worst case scenario, between myself and the emergency room doctor. Or, in a more realistic worst case scenario, between myself, the emergency room doctor, and my roommate, since I'd probably need her help to get to the emergency room.

But a fancy red spine! And a picture of a bear! I am definitely looking forward to the book now.

Seen on a bumper sticker - Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the paramedics.
