Der 'Gute Deutsche' Kultur-Klischee ist, Gott sei Dank, ab und zu die Wahrheit.
God, of all the films to watch on telly when you're feeling emotionally frail, Schindler's List is not the best one. I saw it first in 1994, in an advance screening before it came out here, and I found it almost unbearably upsetting. It still is, pretty much. As you might know, my B.A. is in German (and History of Art), and I did a lot of work on literature from the Nazizeit, especially novels by (mostly Jewish) German writers who were forced into exile. But I don't think you ever become immune, no matter how exposed you are to it, to the depiction of ash from burning bodies falling like snow. I don't think you'd ever want to become immune. Especially when holocausts are happening right now, every day, all over the world.
