Oh God. The recaps are bad enough, but now the recaplets are getting just as bad!
In case you're not feeling the slap of pure joy across your face, let's reiterate: Just this once, grace is built from freedom and love, instead of horror and blood and pain like usual. Just this once, nobody dies. Just this once: the Doctor dances.

I should add that when that episode aired, I was weeping away myself at the end. However, these appalling words have retrospectively destroyed all my pleasure in it. The awesome power of bad writing! Can you just imagine how bad the recap will be? Don't worry, I'll let you know...

I read that yesterday, and then just pretended I hadn't. It's horrible! Stupid Jacob.

Hee! It's like he's trying to destroy our enjoyment of Dr Who...

It's about . . . intimacy.

Bwahaha! Also, urgh, because I BET he will include that terrible line in the actual recap itself.

*hyperventilates*

"slap of pure joy"? He's only giving us ideas.

Ha! How true. I could certainly deliver a few of those slaps myself.

It's just so bad. It's like he once got complimented for an insightful comment, and is desperate to repeat the feat.

I think you're right. Dream on, Jacob, dream on...

Oh. My. God.

I'm getting through these because you wrap them up in laugh-out-loud commentary. I can only imagine the effect they must be having on your brain. Much sympathy. :-)

Which used to be the point of TWoP, of course (wrt watching). Oh, the irony.

Irony indeed! Who'd have foreseen it?

I was extremely disappointed when tightropegirl (a writer for House and Tru Calling, among other shows), lauded Jacob's "lyrical tributes" to Doctor Who in her most recent entry. I haven't read any of the actual recaps (I doubt I could bear it), but I can tell from just the little bits you've quoted that he's a big faux-intellectual loser who was probably one of those guys who never shut up in his college classes and was hated by not only all his fellow students, but the professors as well. I had (mild) respect for Doris Egan when she made Tru actually good (right before it got cancelled, bah), but now...

Heh, I think your character analysis is probably dead on. But I am genuinely amazed that anyone, let alone a successful writer, could praise those recaps, because as you've probably gathered they're some of the worst things I have ever, ever read in my life. What is the world coming to?

Although hmmm, having looked at her LJ, I see there's a touch of the Jacobs about her own writing...

"A touch of the Jacobs" is now officially A Phrase.

I've gathered! I love all your entries on them. I'm amazed recaps like that even make it onto the site -- back in 2000-2002 or so (before they really started to suck), Sars and Wing Chun would have mocked the hell out of this guy, if their old Dawson's Creek recaps are any indication.

And heh, yeah, she does get a little... uh, whimsical... in her LJ. Luckily, that kind of crap never shows up in her actual TV episodes.

I think TWoP lost its way when it stopped concentrating on guilty pleasures. The joy of the early Dawson's days was the fact that the recappers were mocking genuinely crappy programmes, not offering their high-school level analyses of the grand themes of genuinely good ones. Once it stopped being about snarking at shit like 7th Heaven and started being about the recappers showing off their great critical skills, the fun was gone.

The problem to me isn't even the quality of the shows they pick- it's that it's either shows they're not ashamed to be watching, or shows they don't enjoy. You don't get to pick and choose which PART of the guilty pleasure; it's kind of an all-or-nothing thing, you know?

I think you've got something there -- it's entirely possible for a good show to still be a guilty pleasure, especially in the SF and fantasy stuff where there's always going to be something ridiculous and nonsensical going on. I think Lost is a good show, but Daniel still writes pretty good, funny recaps for it. The Veronica Mars recaps have been pretty good, too. I think someone could write good recaps for Doctor Who, but apparently Jacob is not that someone.

I used to like Aaron's recaps, but he seems to have disappeared. It could've been interesting to see what he made of Doctor Who.
