heroic heron

I just had a fifteen minute conversation with two nine year old neighbours in which one of them told me - very seriously and with dramatic actions - the story of how his grandmother's cat fought with a huge heron. I do love living around here sometimes.

Also, it is gorgeously warm and sunny and I just walked to and from the library through the park. It'll probably be lashing rain tomorrow but I am feeling rather fond of my neighbourhood right now.

Once upon a time, quite a nuumber of years ago now, I was walking home to Donnybrook via Baggot Street late one night. As I crossed the bridge, there was a young couple looking over the bridge. "What's that bird?" he asked her. As she didn't know, I ventured the opinion that it was a heron. "A herring?" he said, incredulously. Do they teach them anything at all in school, I sometimes wonder?
