Although Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daugthers is one of my favourite books ever, and I love her short stories ('The Old Nurse's Story' is one of the best ghost stories ever), somehow I've never managed to get into her other novels. This may be changing - I picked up a copy of Ruth last week and started it yesterday, and now I can't put it down. Also, I think tragic Victorian tales of suffering suit this absolutely vile weather, which shows absolutely no sign of ever getting better again.

I've read her Bronte biography about 20 times, but for some ridiculous reason I've never read anything else. Time to go to the library!

You should try Wives and Daughters - it's one of my favourite ever books. The dialogue is really natural and unstylised, so it feels amazingly modern.
