Although Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daugthers is one of my favourite books ever, and I love her short stories ('The Old Nurse's Story' is one of the best ghost stories ever), somehow I've never managed to get into her other novels. This may be changing - I picked up a copy of Ruth last week and started it yesterday, and now I can't put it down. Also, I think tragic Victorian tales of suffering suit this absolutely vile weather, which shows absolutely no sign of ever getting better again.

I thought I remembered you singing the praises of Gaskell before!

I think the reason I've never really been able to get into her other books before is that I always tried them when I was in the mood for something like W&D, and of course the books are very different. Now I feel like I'm approaching them on their own terms, if that makes any sense. I'm still really enjoying Ruth, although the heroine's saintliness is a bit wearing at times.
