Down in the Hole

As you may have noticed, I have become totally obsessed with The Wire in recent months, as is apparently my duty as a journalist. Of course, really I should have become obsessed with it five years ago, but better late than never. Anyway, there are many magnificent things about the Greatest Programme Ever Made (no, really, it is! It is!). The political anger, the labyrinthine plots, the funniness (it's absolutely hilarious a lot of the time, something that I think often gets overlooked), the fact that it's often heartbreakingly sad (whenever anything bad happens to Bubbles, I find it incredibly distressing), the theme tune (my favourite is Season 4's hip-hop tinged version, brilliantly performed by some young Baltimore boys). And then there are the characters, probably the most complex characters ever to grace our television screens. But there's something else about many of these characters: they're kind of hot. Now, I'm not talking about personality in these cases - Mc Nulty and Stringer Bell are hardly dream dates - but there's something about them... Same for Kima, Bodie, and Avon - in fact, the only person who might be halfway normal to go out with is Carver. Am I alone in my many crushes on the Wire cast? I'm probably alone in fancying Bodie, whom I always thought was hilarious and a wonderful character (he always looks so exasperated by the whole drug dealing business, and I love his interactions with Herc and Carver) but actually started to become hotter as time went on (he's only three years younger than me, by the way, in case you thought this was some sort of unwholesome underage crush).

In fact, there's only one way to settle this: a poll. Now, I don't fancy all of these people, but I can see the appeal of all of them. What about you, fellow Wire obsessives viewers?

You should have included the FBI guy whose name escapes me.

Hmmmm, he wouldn't have struck me as one of the show's lookers, but it's all subjective (I'm surprised by how few people fancy Carver, actually!).

I know! I am disturbed by my attraction to almost every character I fancy! Even the ones who aren't murderers, like Mc Nulty and Kima, are not exactly perfect partners. I was also disturbed that I fancied Stringer not only when he was wearing his sharp suits and specs (yum), but even when he was clad in his appalling leisure wear of silky polo necks and what can only be described as "slacks".

I feel bad about fancying McNulty because he's so obviously bad news.

I loved the first series but bounced off the second. I should try again.

You totally should. I think the second series was my favourite (although I'm nearly finished the fourth, which I think will take that title then) because it was so self-contained - it really did feel like a novel.

And I think pretty much everyone in the Wire is a bad, bad romantic prospect! One of the best things about the characterisation is that a character like Mc Nulty makes you like them and then does something like leave his kids in the middle of the night to take a booty call and you're reminded that he's actually an irresponsible prick.

McNulty looks too much like my father looked in the 80s for me to consider him hot.

Heh, that would be a bit disturbing!

I think a woman on one of the dvd extras speaks for everyone when she says "I'd like to thank Idris Elba for existing".

I have much love for Cutty and his fabulous smile, wearing his early 90s tracksuits and shagging everyone's mum.

Hee, to both statements! And yeah, Cutty really does have a ridiculously gorgeous smile - I should have included him on the list. I've never fancied him, though - it's possibly the tracksuits, and possibly the fact that he does have that kind of neckless build.

Actually, you know who else has a lovely (but rare) smile? Daniels. But he also keeps taking his clothes off and then he looks like a plastic Acton Man, which put me off him.

Um, Action Man, not Acton Man - he's not from west London. As far as I know.

I say yes to Stringer, Avon and Bodie, but especially to Carver and Aiden Gillen.

Took me ages to decide that I don't fancy McNulty.

I'm not sure about McNulty myself - he's more craggy than my usual tastes, to say nothing of being a terrible husband and father, but there's something about him...

I can't believe so few of us fancy Carver! Not with you on Mr Gillen, though - possibly because he kind of reminds me of my ex-boyfriend.

I'm with you on all three, although I'm not quite so keen on McNulty. But still, who knew the denizens of Baltimore were so hot? I should have paid more attention when my parents lived down the road (in Montgomery County, the uber-bourgeois suburb frequently mentioned in the show as being pretty much the anti-Baltimore).

I envy you having it all in front of you! I think it takes a few episodes to really get into it, but once you do, you can't stop. It really is the greatest TV programme I've ever seen, and the fourth season (which I've just finished watching) is just heartbreaking.

By the way, I know I promised you 30 Rock in return for your kind gift of VM, but it turned out that I'd stupidly deleted the old episodes form my hard-drive at work! I wonder if I can copy DVDs....

Oh, McNulty is such a moronic, yet well-intentioned, also HOT irresponsible dumbass. But I love him anyway. My love for Dominic West has made me watch some truly terrible movies (e.g. The Forgotten, which, DO NOT WATCH.)

And I also love, love, LOVE Bodie.

I think Avon is kind of hot, but STRINGER BELL is, like, nuclear hot. Especially in his glasses.

I should also have a Wire icon.

What is it about the glasses? But they really do send him into another level of hotness.

Yay, another Bodie fan! I don't know why I find him so charming. I think it's basically because he has a sense of humour, despite being, of course, a cold-blooded killer. Even McNulty and the other cops genuinely like him!

Dominic West was in my sister's class in college, by the way (he went to my alma mater, but would have graduated just as I started). And I've just found out that one of my colleagues knows him really well! That's what happens when an actor lives in Dublin for a few years...

Bodie is GREAT, and as you said elsewhere, he has that great relationship of respect/affection for the police, and they for him. They know he's not going to jerk them around too much, and vice versa. He's a relatively good guy doing a bad thing, but they can see that.

Stringer Bell's glasses might have to become an LJ interest!

And ooh, that's very cool that you have so few degrees of separation from Dominic West! (And the rest of The Wire cast by extension!)
