Damn cyclists!

This story could have been entitled "TV presenter drives carelessly and hits a cyclist". But But no. Apparently when you hit a cyclist, it's their fault for "veering in front of you".

Gah. Also, why do all cyclist-blaming articles use the word "veer"? I don't think I've ever veered in my life.

I once read someone online saying that they didn't like even driving beside cyclists because they thought they might "suddenly veer in front of them". I pointed out to them that they were about as likely to "suddenly veer in front of them" as they were to "suddenly spontaneously drive onto the footpath". Strangely enough, most cyclists are actually in control of their bikes, they're not like some kind of wild steed.

Some cyclists do veer, and act erratically (I say this as a cyclist who often curses her fellow cyclists). We don't know enough to judge this story, surely?

I think the problem is that it's totally depicted as being a cyclist's fault purely on the word of the driver who hit him or her. I don't think they'd write about a car-on-car crash in the same way.

And some drivers don't pay attention, especially late at night when they've had a long day of work and are tired! It's hardly a balanced story.
