a week in the life of a monkey princess

I haven't updated properly in quite a while, which is odd because last week was lots of fun. Here are the cool things that brightened my life:

1: My friend Mark's exhibition in the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar. Go to it. It is so good. I went to the launch on Wednesday, unsure whether I'd like it or not, because video installations frequently do, in fact, suck, and I was worried that I would have to think of fake praising stuff to say to Mark, who is a very cool person (yiskah, you met him in London! He's the Deputy Fuzz frontboy!). But I needn't have worried at all, because it was amazing and he is some sort of genius. The launch was great fun, not least because when stuffing my face with pasta in Nude on my way there I met glitzfrau (rather amusingly, we were sitting opposite each other, both reading, and didn't notice the other's presence for about 10 minutes), and we enjoyed the free wine and such like.

2: Unexpected afternoon drinking! It's the spice of life! On Thursday I met the aforementioned Frau for lunch, which we ate in the Postgrad Common Room of my alma mater (and the Frau's current, um, mater, although lord knows you wouldn't want Trinity as your mother). Our peaceful dining was interupted by a fire alarm, so we scuttled out and decided, as the sun was now shining, to get some Arts Block tea/hot chocolate and relive our youth by sitting out in the sun of Fellow's Square, drinking hot beverages and talking bollocks. Which is what we were doing when who should walk by but daegaer, who accepted our offer of an impromptu afternoon drink in the Buttery. Which, for myself and the Frau, turned into about four. Yes, getting drunk in the afternoon! As not done by me since about 1996, and then very rarely (although, it must be said, usually at this time of year, when impending exams and nice weather and the Trinity campus combined to booze-friendly effect). Anyway, it was really great fun, and afterwards me and the Frau went for nice Japanese food and were home and sober by about nine. Result!

3: Went to see X2 on Saturday afternoon, and loved it. So, so comic geek-friendly! How cool was the appearance of Dr Hank McCoy (who is, of course, really the Beast) on the TV news in the bar? And Nightcrawler! I was sure they'd change the character and make him (A) not German and (B) not a really devout Catholic but lo, they made him both. Cool.

4: Continuing the Glitzfrau theme, I had a very nice dinner in her house on Saturday night. And we watched one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life, Fantasy Bedtime Hour, which can be found here. It's basically two girls, in bed, analysing Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant in great detail, page by page, including input from "experts" and truly hilarious reenactments. part of it are weirdly boring, but the funny bits made me almost cry with laughter. Enjoy....

5: And finally, yesterday the Boy and I went to Fota Island Wildlife Park in Cork, which is now my favourite place in the entire world. It's part of a world wide conservation programme, so they breed a lot of animals and so there are lots of baby ones, who rock so hard. The best moment was when we were gazing at a bunch of monkeys and the Boy went "wow, look at that really fat one", when the fat one's tummy fell off and ran away because it was not a tummy at all, it was a tiny baby monkey, who went off eating an apple. Coolest thing ever!

I loved X2 too! I was pathetically excited to see my favourite heroes in a proper film, and better than the first one. Hope Hank gets more screen time next time. And Kitty!

Yes! Running through the walls! That was cool.

And yes, I really hope the Beast is in the next film; he's my favourite character - well, him and Nightcrawler. I always used to be more of a DC comics person - well, actually, I was always more of an indie-comics person, but when it came to the more mainstream stuff, I was more DC - but I do like the X Men. And Patrick is a huge X Men fan, so he was geeking out even more than me at the film!

More FBH
Hi, I'm just dropping in to say that if you enjoyed Episode One of FBH, you should check out Episodes 5 ( http://www.fantasybedtimehour.com/episodes/FBH_QT_EP5.html ) and 10 ( http://www.fantasybedtimehour.com/episodes/FBH_QT_EP10.html ). And the others, of course, but those two are compilation episodes, so they've got all the reenactments.

And if you only saw Episode One, why are there quotation marks around experts?

I loved X-Men 2, by the way, except for the last fifteen minutes or so--all the overblown drama surrounding Jean Grey trying martyr herself--which I couldn't stand. The rest of it, however, rocked.

Well, because I know the expert in question, him being the former boyfriend of a good friend of mine - which is how I found out about it - and know that he is not, by profession, a Stephen R. Donaldson expert. Also, the fact that the whole thing is, you know, not exactly serious, kind of implies that they are not suddenly going to bring out someone who wrote two doctoral theses on Lord Foul's Bane (which I have, to my eternal shame, read. But a long time ago. Like, when I was about 10. And only because it was in the house.) Although that would be pretty hilarious...

And yeah, the Jean Gray martyrdom thing was a bit tedious, wasn't it? Although I presume it's so they can bring her back with that whole Phoenix thing. They're faithful comic geeks, those film makers!

continuing last post (why doesn't LJ have an edit-commentfeature?)
Actually, when I think about it, perhaps I was just assuming my friend's friend isn't really an expert - she certainly didn't give the impression he was, though.... Maybe I should be taking the experts more seriously...
