Phew.

So, I finished it about half an hour ago. I really liked it, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the ending. I think if Neville had died I would have been in hysterics, but after all the fake build-ups to what looked like almost each of his friends dying, I found Sirius's death a little anti-climactic. As was the prophecy - I mean, it was kind of obvious, wasn't it?

That said, I tore through it, and I loved loads about it. Ginny was great, as were Fred and George (their triumphant departure brought a tear to my eye). Umbridge was a great creepy villain.

By the way, I'm not really someone who looks out for slashy pairings, but I totally think we were meant to think Sirius and Lupin were a couple. Lupin coming "to stay with Sirius"? The two of them giving Harry a joint present? There were a few other things too....

Yeah, I fell for it the first time - with Arthur Weasley - and was pretty upset, so by the end of the book I was more like, "ho hum, Sirius is dead."

Loved Ginny's character, loved the twins as well, liked Tonks and the new peripheral characters. I also really enjoyed the scene where he goes into Snape's Pensieve and watches his dad be an arrogant berk, that was unexpected and much appreciated.

I do wish that she had a) let up on the angst for a little bit, even just for a few scenes and that b) we had a little bit more of Ron & Hermione interaction since that was a major theme in the last book and it seemed a bit odd that it was never brought up again.

But overall I liked it a lot; and I hope we don't have to wait another three years for the next one. Apparently she's got half the sixth book written already.

Ooh, I dunno, we might have to wait a while. She said in her BBC interview on Thursday that she's only got a chapter or so written of the sixth book, and that it'll take a while to finish it because she just had a baby.

I too was really surprised by the nastiness of the youthful James and Sirius. That was pretty good twist - that Snape had a real, justifiable reason to hate them. Still doesn't excuse him being such a shit to Harry, though.

And yes, I could have done with a bit less angst. Sometimes I just wanted my magical school story, minus fear of imminent death and Nazi-esque school inspectors.

The angst was irritating, but it is pretty accurate. I live with a 15 year old boy (my son, you naughty minds)and he acts pretty much the same way.

I found your journal through altoidsaddict, btw.

I sat up all saturday night and finished it at half six in the morning, and i agree with most of what was said.

I didn't like the way she held practically everyone out over the edge of a cliff before chucking Sirius off, it was like, eeny meenie mynie mo or something.

I did think it was a pity there wasn't more Ron and Hermione action, Ginny rocks, and, well, to be honest, i've always had a bit of a soft spot for old Severus.

The fact that harry is growing up, well, becoming all Angry Young Man anyway, is great, along with the fact that his interactions with adults are becoming slightly more complicated, rather than Good Guy, Bad Guy. It's one of the strangest parts of growing up, discovering that your teachers are in fact human and your parents can sometimes do the wrong thing.

Umbridge was a great character. Reminded me of those Fáinne-Wearing, goggle-eyed, willing-to-sacrifice-their-humanity-to-further-the-cause teachers in Irish college, for some reason.

I can't believe that it's all finished and that i'm going to have to wait another million years for the next one, but i suppose i'm used to it at this stage from all those Robert Jordan books I used to read. And there's all that slashy fanfiction you're going to write about Sirius and Lupin to keep me going :)
