random book recommendation

If you haven't read it already, please read Persepolis, a graphic-memoir (hey, it's not a novel!) about life in Iran before and after the 1979 revolution. I found it at the work book sale this morning (which was great, as I'd been meaning to buy it anyway), and I can't describe how amazing it is. The artwork is utterly wonderful, as is the writing, and the whole thing is pretty much perfect.

God, isn't it? I read that she's working on another volume of it; I hope we don't have to wait too long for it.

Have you seen any of her children's books, or do you know whether they're in print here? Her artwork is just amazing; I'd love to see more of her stuff.

Yep, there's another volume in the works. I haven't seen anything else by her - hadn't heard of her until Persepolis came out. Also recommend you take a look at Epileptic, by her fellow L'Association artist David B. It's also a childhood memoir, very strange and affecting and one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. The translation was issued by Fantagraphics, though, so it's not so easy to find...

yeah. i read the whole book in one go last night, and i fucking bawled at the bit where she visits her uncle in jail. i mean not the sort of single-tear-rolling-down-my-cheek thing that often happens when i read something sad ... i fucking bawled.
