knitting for the public good

Inspired by Get Crafty's scarf drive, I was wondering would any of my fellow knitters be interested in doing similar for the Simon Community, which is an excellent Irish charity for homeless people? We could do a knitting drive, maybe even get sponsorship, and knit lots of scarves which Simon could give to their service users. I know it would be easier to just buy scarves and donate them, and I hope this doesn't sound patronising, but I think it would be nice to show people using Simon's services that people will make stuff just for them.

I've been thinking recently that I would like to do more charity work; I used to volunteer in the Amnesty shop sometimes when I was in college, and I have a few standing orders making charitable donations every month, but I would like to do more.

What a cool idea! Depending on the schedule, count me in!

If you're looking for voluntary work, the National Adult Literacy Association is certainly always looking for volunteers (http://www.nala.ie). That said, I find the work very gruelling, and it is a huge commitment - two years at a minimum. At the same time, there's little I can think of that's a worthier cause in Ireland.
